In every other country outside of the United States, physical therapy is known as physiotherapy. Although these two terms are traditionally synonymous, I consider them to have different meanings. Physical Therapy, to me, is the traditional methods of modalities, manual therapies, and exercise. Physiotherapy, in my view, incorportates the word 'physiology' which refers to biology at a cellular level. In my clinic, I blend both aspects of these definitions into my unconventional practice. Phys- originates from Greek which means natural order. From this root we also get physics which is also incorporated into my practice.
Physical Therapy can be your gateway to wellness - that is physiological health.
Learn, understand and practice the fundamentals of the human body - that is phys. It is like having the instruction manual to take better care of oneself.
Manual therapy can include massage, myofascial release, Graston Technique, lymphatic mobilization, joint mobilization and stretching.
Specific and individualized exercises can help bring neutrality and awareness of posture.
Understanding the position, alignment and joint mechanics can greatly reduce pain by reducing unnecessary stress to the area.
Awareness of movement including gait, stairs, lifting, etc.
Sometimes it is beneficial to get the nervous system in its healing phase which is the parasympathetic state. This may be helpful in cases of chronic stress, trauma, depression or anxiety. Utilizing Vagus nerve activation techniques can be extremely helpful.
